Cytogenetics is the study of the structure of chromosome material. It includes routine analysis of G-Banded chromosomes, other cytogenetic banding techniques, as well as molecular cytogenetics such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH).

Acute Leukemias, lymphomas, chronic myeloid and lymphoid disorders are examined cytogenetically in order to establish the exact nature of the acquired genetic change. Rearrangements, also known as translocations, inversions, deletions, etc., can usually be detected under a light microscope. In most leukemias and lymphomas, changes in chromosome number (ploidy) or chromosome structure (rearrangements) are often observed.
